The affect at work in inanimate alice: why is it provocative?
constant music track, movement of background, constant movement.
The affect of inanimate alice--the initial visceral impulse--is of frenzy, of ceaselessness. The short-loop music and jittery panning in transitions add to this, as well as the constant feeling of being in the dark. It is lonely, desperate, lost. The text goes much slower than a normal reading speed, and the result is a feeling of imposed restraint, of needing to push faster than the world allows. Put together with the narrative, which reveals itself and imposes itself upon the character, the impulse of helplessness is accentuated.
